Gareth’s Miles for Melanoma
Fundraiser and Patient Gareth Petty Embarks on Remarkable Journey, Walking the Length of Wales to Raise Vital Funds for Velindre.
In August 2023, Gareth Petty received the life-altering diagnosis of stage 3 melanoma after noticing a minor bleeding from a mole on his back. His treatment began with two operations, and he is now undergoing immunotherapy at Velindre Cancer Centre.
Just a year after his diagnosis, Gareth is embarking on an incredible challenge: walking the entire length of Wales. Starting on August 16, 2024, from Llandudno, Gareth aims to complete his 180-mile journey on August 25 at the Cross Inn, Cowbridge.
Gareth’s mission is threefold: to thank the NHS and Velindre staff for their exceptional care, to raise awareness about melanoma, and to generate vital funds for Velindre.
“When I was diagnosed, I wanted to turn it into something positive,” Gareth shares. “This challenge is to raise awareness for melanoma, highlight the importance of regular body checks and early diagnosis, and to thank the amazing staff at the NHS and Velindre who support me through my treatment.”
Melanoma, a type of skin cancer, often presents as a new mole or changes to an existing mole. Regular body checks are essential, and any concerning symptoms should be evaluated by a GP immediately. For more information, please visit the NHS website: Melanoma Skin Cancer.
At Velindre, we have invested over £6 million into cancer research, clinical trials, and the development of new treatments. This research is crucial for discovering new therapies, improving early detection, and finding preventive measures. Fundraising efforts like Gareth’s make these advancements possible, helping to increase survival rates and manageability of cancers.
