Highlights from Jiffy’s 50 Cancer Challenge 2024!

On Sunday the 18th of August 2024, Velindre Charity and Swansea Bay Health Charity hosted their 4th annual Jiffy’s 50 Cancer Challenge event.

This epic cycling event seen 338 riders’ cycle from Cardiff to Swansea connecting two of Wales’s incredible cancer centres. It was a day of camaraderie, joy and celebration and all cyclists and supporters not only completed the 50-mile cycle but raised over £40,000 for the charities. With this year’s fundraising the event in total has raised of £250,000 over the 4 years since its establishment.

Some key on-the-day highlights:

Whiskey the dog joins our cyclists!

For the first time ever we had a dog join us on the cycle. Whiskey the dog joined his owner for 20 miles of the cycle and loved every second. As a dog lover himself, Jiffy was so excited to see the dedication of the riders and of course their lovely pets!

Jiffy’s speech at the finish line!

At the event finish line Jiffy took to the mic to thank everyone who made this event possible. There were a few riders who were current or ex patients of the cancer centres and their commitment to completing the ride was truly inspirational and a reminder of why we were all there to show our support.

Jiffy’s goal is to make this event the biggest cycling event in Wales and we are keen to make this a reality and continue to fundraise to create a better future for cancer patients and their families in Wales.

Velindre patient Nick shares his experience of Velindre

Nick O’Donnell is a current patient and Velindre and took on the ride with some of his friends to raise vital funds for the charity. He had a extremely positive experience of Velindre and would like to thank all the staff that supported him and his family during treatment.

“To be able to do this ride today means more to me than anything, and I do try and push myself to encourage others that there is a life even with cancer and whilst fighting it.”

Swansea patient Tracey takes part in the ride with 42 members of her Celtic Triathlon Club

“Cancer has hit our family very hard. I lost my husband to lung cancer 24 years ago. My niece died at 22 months with brain cancer. I lost my mum seven years ago to cancer. My dad has had surgery to have a skin cancer removed from his head. After my Cancer Operation, I’m so relieved that I actually came out unscathed, apart from a nice little scar that goes down the length of my neck, which you can hardly see. That’s why I’m so passionate.”
